Ozone odor treatment: what it does and what comes first

A stubborn smell needs a plan, not just a machine. Start with what is causing it, clean or remove the affected material, then decide whether any remaining odor needs treatment. Rapid Dry helps homeowners across Central Texas work through those steps.

What is ozone, and how does it work?

Ozone is O3: a gas with three oxygen atoms. It reacts with some odor-causing chemicals, but it does not remove every contaminant. Those reactions can also create irritating byproducts. It is not a substitute for cleaning, and a better smell does not prove the air is safe. Read the EPA’s ozone guidance.

Does the source of the smell need to be removed?

Yes—the cause needs to be dealt with first. Cleaning may remove the source from a washable surface. Other situations need contaminated material removed, a leak repaired, or a pest problem resolved. Simply treating the air leaves that work unfinished. Source control is the first approach described in EPA indoor-air guidance.

What does source cleaning mean?

  • Smoke: assess affected walls, hard surfaces, carpet and furniture; choose cleaning methods appropriate for each material.
  • Pet accidents: check how far contamination extends before choosing pet odor treatment. Surface cleaning may not reach affected padding.
  • Musty rooms: investigate the moisture problem first. Start with a moisture assessment rather than assuming the smell needs ozone.
  • Animal odors: arrange removal of the animal and contaminated nesting material before considering remaining odor.

We’ll talk through what can be cleaned, what may need replacing, and which work belongs with another specialist. You approve the price before cleaning starts.

Will ozone fix a dead rat smell inside a wall?

It is not a replacement for removing the animal. Contact a pest or wildlife professional to locate it and determine how to access the area. Do not cut into a wall blindly. Cleanup may also involve nesting material and contaminated insulation.

Rodent contamination needs careful handling. Do not dry-sweep or vacuum droppings; CDC recommends wet disinfection procedures. See CDC guidance for cleaning after rodents. Pest removal, wall access and repairs are not part of an ozone-only quote.

What about cannabis or marijuana smoke?

Tell us whether the odor comes from ongoing smoking, stored material, or a room where smoking has stopped. For a smoked-in room, the cleaning plan should consider surfaces and soft furnishings—not only the air.

We do not promise that one ozone treatment will remove every cannabis odor. Removing the source and cleaning affected surfaces come first.

Is cleaning included in the ozone price?

An ozone-only quote covers the treatment listed in that quote. Cleaning is included only when it is listed too. That keeps a small treatment job from being confused with a whole-home deep clean.

  • Treatment: the agreed treatment area, equipment setup and collection, and the treatment visits listed in your estimate.
  • Cleaning, when needed: surface wiping, cleaning products, carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning are itemized separately.
  • Other work: disposal, material replacement, pest removal and repairs are separate from treatment.

Before you book, we’ll explain the recommended work and total price. A machine treatment should not be booked as a shortcut around necessary cleanup. Large areas, heavy contamination or additional visits need a specific estimate.

Can people or pets stay during treatment?

No. Ozone can harm lungs. Treatment must be isolated from occupied areas, including neighboring units. Plants and some materials can also be damaged. Return requires appropriate ventilation and a verified re-entry procedure—not simply waiting until the smell disappears. There is no universal safe waiting time. EPA explains the exposure risks.
